Money Matters: How to Talk to Your Parents about the Wedding Costs

By JP Events Staff

August 13, 2018

Ugh, money talks.

We all hate talking about money, and even more when it involves your wedding and both of your parents. It’s just not a nice topic to discuss when it comes to the Big Day, or anything else, really – mostly because money talks can very frequently diverge, and they can end up on hurt feelings.

So, how do you have the talk? How to talk wedding money with your parents?

We have some tips, so read on and find out more.

  • Make sure you and your SO are on the same page. Before you go out in the “wild” and talk to your parents, have a talk to your fiancé. Where do you stand on this matter? Do you want or need your parents’ help? Will you let them pay for the entirety of the wedding? Will the bride’s parents pay only, or will his parents pitch in as well? There are a lot of questions you have to figure out between the two of you before you even attempt a serious discussion with your parents.
  • Be delicate. Your parents only want to help you – so even if you don’t want to accept their financial help, refuse them in the politest way possible.  If you do want to accept their help, remember to set the boundaries as well. Of course, your parents are paying for the wedding and you are obviously thankful for that. However, that doesn’t mean they should be the ones to dictate every wedding decision – and if you’re not OK with that, you should explain it to your parents nicely.
  • Balance things out. Are his parents offering to help you with more money than your parents? Before you accept, make sure to run this by your mom and dad, so that you know for certain they aren’t offended by the gesture. You’d be surprised how easy someone’s feelings can be hurt when there’s money in the middle, and even more so when there’s an important life event happening as well!
